For a growing number of buyers, these imperfections are not defects but evidence of a human presence, a welcome antidote to the flawless anonymity of the assembly line. Yet the revival is not without its tensions. Genuine craft demands years of apprenticeship and command prices that many cannot afford, so the celebration of the handmade can drift into a marker of status rather than a democratic pleasure. There is also the awkward fact that much “artisanal” marketing merely borrows the language of craft to sell ordinary factory goods at a premium. Still, at its honest best, the enduring appeal of the handmade reminds us that we value not only what an object does, but the visible evidence of the care and time invested in making it.
