Every few weeks, somewhere in the world, the last fluent speaker of a language dies, and with them an entire way of describing reality quietly disappears. Linguists estimate that of the roughly seven thousand languages spoken today, nearly half may vanish within a century. The loss is easy to underestimate. A language is not merely a set of labels attached to universal objects; it encodes distinctions, categories, and relationships that its speakers have found worth marking over generations. Some languages track direction by fixed compass points rather than by the body, so that speakers must always know where north lies. Others fold subtle information about evidence and certainty into ordinary verbs, obliging a speaker to indicate whether they saw an event or merely heard of it. When such a language falls silent, we lose not only vocabulary but a distinctive lens on experience, along with oral histories, ecological knowledge, and centuries of accumulated wisdom rarely written down. Efforts to record and revive endangered languages have grown, and a handful of communities have achieved remarkable revivals. Yet documentation alone cannot substitute for living use. A language truly survives only when children still learn it at home and carry it, unselfconsciously, into the ordinary business of their daily lives.
