Cities also offer a liquidity of opportunity that thinner settlements cannot match: a deep market in which unusual talents and unusual needs stand a far greater chance of finding one another. This is not to romanticise urban life, whose costs in congestion, inequality, and alienation are real and often severe. It is merely to explain why, generation after generation, people continue to pay a steep premium to crowd together. The city endures not despite its density but because of it, and each obituary written for it has so far proved premature.
