Boredom has acquired the status of a solved problem. The device in our pocket guarantees that no queue, no waiting room, no insomniac hour need ever go unfilled, and we have accepted the bargain so completely that the sensation itself has become exotic, reported by children with the alarm once reserved for hunger. Before congratulating ourselves, it is worth asking what the unfilled interval used to do. The testimony of artists and scientists is suspiciously consistent: the idea arrived in the bath, on the walk, in the train’s dull rhythm — in the mind’s idling, not its labor. Psychologists have since given the anecdote a mechanism, observing that an unoccupied brain does not switch off but wanders, rehearsing futures, recombining the past, conducting unsupervised experiments that focused attention forbids. Boredom, on this account, is not an absence of stimulation but a signal, mildly aversive by design, that nudges us toward the unscheduled thinking we would never choose on purpose. To medicate it instantly is to silence the signal and forfeit the wandering. None of this amounts to nostalgia for tedium, and the romance of boredom comes easily to those who suffer little of it; an afternoon’s idleness is a luxury, a decade of it a sentence. The argument is narrower: that a life engineered to contain no empty intervals is not optimized but impoverished, and that we have automated away a discomfort without asking what it was for.
