There was probably no single apocalyptic blaze, and no clean moment at which knowledge vanished. This unglamorous truth carries a sobering lesson that a spectacular fire would obscure. Institutions of learning are rarely destroyed in an instant by external enemies; far more often they erode quietly, starved of attention and resources, their guardians dispersed, their holdings left to rot unread. The romantic myth invites us to fear the dramatic villain with the torch, when the likelier threat is the accumulation of small indifferences. Preservation, the story suggests, is not a single heroic act of defence but a continual, unglamorous labour of maintenance, and what we fail to sustain we may lose so gradually that we scarcely notice its passing until it is already, irrecoverably, gone.
