For all the recurring predictions of their demise, great cities have proved stubbornly resilient, absorbing plagues, fires, wars, and, most recently, a pandemic that seemed poised to scatter their populations permanently. The reasons for this durability are more subtle than mere inertia. Cities are, at bottom, engines of proximity: they compress vast numbers of people into a shared space and thereby multiply the chance encounters from which ideas, businesses, and cultures spring. Economists observe that productivity tends to rise measurably with urban density, as knowledge diffuses through informal conversation quite as much as through deliberate collaboration. A remote worker may replicate the formal functions of an office from a distant village, yet struggle to reproduce the serendipitous exchange, the overheard remark or unplanned introduction, that quietly seeds innovation. Cities also offer a liquidity of opportunity that thinner settlements cannot match: a deep market in which unusual talents and unusual needs stand a far greater chance of finding one another. This is not to romanticise urban life, whose costs in congestion, inequality, and alienation are real and often severe. It is merely to explain why, generation after generation, people continue to pay a steep premium to crowd together. The city endures not despite its density but because of it, and each obituary written for it has so far proved premature.
