We tend to imagine memory as a kind of recording device, faithfully preserving events so that we can replay them later exactly as they happened. Decades of research suggest this comforting picture is largely an illusion. Rather than retrieving a fixed file, the brain reconstructs each memory afresh every time we recall it, filling gaps with assumptions, expectations, and details borrowed from other moments. This is why confident witnesses can be sincerely, spectacularly wrong, and why two people who shared the same afternoon may remember it in incompatible ways. Crucially, the act of remembering can itself alter the memory, subtly rewriting it before we store it again. A leading question, a suggestive photograph, or even our own retelling can plant details that were never there. Far from being a flaw, this flexibility may be essential: a mind that merely archived the past would struggle to imagine the future, which depends on recombining fragments of experience into scenarios that have never occurred. Memory, in other words, is less a librarian guarding fixed records than a storyteller endlessly revising the tale, and its unreliability is inseparable from its creativity. Understanding this should make us humbler about our certainties and more forgiving of the honest contradictions we notice in others.
