The arrival of software capable of generating pictures, prose, and music from a few typed words has provoked a debate that is often framed too simply, as a contest between human genius and mechanical imitation. The more searching questions lie elsewhere. These systems produce their output by distilling patterns from staggering quantities of existing human work, which raises uncomfortable issues of consent and credit that our laws, drafted for an earlier age, are ill-equipped to resolve. Yet it would be complacent to dismiss the results as mere collage. Something genuinely novel can emerge from the recombination of the familiar, as it arguably always has in human creativity, which never sprang from nothing either. The deeper unease may be less about authorship than about abundance. When competent images or passable essays can be conjured effortlessly and without limit, the very scarcity that once lent creative labour its dignity and its market value begins to dissolve. We may find ourselves drowning in adequate content while starving for the particular, hard-won voice that signals a real mind wrestling with real experience. If so, the enduring value of art will migrate, as it has before, away from mere technical facility, which the machine now supplies cheaply, and toward the qualities no algorithm can counterfeit: the courage of genuine perspective, the friction of lived struggle, and the trust that arises when we know a fellow human truly meant what they made.
