Conventional wisdom holds that choice is an unalloyed good: the more options a person enjoys, the freer and more satisfied they must surely be. A body of research complicates this cheerful assumption. When the number of alternatives swells beyond a certain point, the psychological costs of deciding begin to outweigh the benefits. Confronted with dozens of nearly indistinguishable products, shoppers grow anxious, defer decisions, or abandon the purchase altogether, paralysed by the fear of choosing wrongly. Even those who do decide often report less satisfaction, haunted by the shadow of the roads not taken and quick to imagine that some forgone alternative would have served them better. The phenomenon extends well beyond the supermarket. In careers, relationships, and the endless scroll of entertainment, an abundance of possibility can breed a peculiarly modern restlessness, a suspicion that fulfilment lies perpetually elsewhere. None of this amounts to an argument for scarcity or coercion; being denied choice altogether is manifestly worse. Rather, it suggests that freedom and welfare are not simply proportional, and that the architecture within which choices are presented matters as much as their sheer number. The wisest institutions, and the wisest individuals, may therefore be those that curate thoughtfully, imposing a gentle structure that spares us the tyranny of limitless, undifferentiated options while preserving the autonomy that genuine choice, exercised within reasonable bounds, undoubtedly confers.
