The Eiffel Tower was designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel and was built for the 1889 World Fair in Paris. At first it was criticised by many artists, who thought it was ugly. Today, however, it is visited by millions of tourists every year and is considered one of the most famous landmarks in the world. The tower is repainted every seven years to protect it from rust.
