Modern culture treats tiredness almost as a badge of honor. Executives boast about five hours of sleep, students compare all-nighters before exams, and the phrase “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is repeated as if it were wisdom. Sleep scientists find this attitude baffling. Decades of research show that a chronically under-slept brain remembers less, decides worse, and reacts more slowly, while the body pays with a weaker immune system and a higher risk of heart disease. What makes the problem stubborn is that sleep-deprived people are famously poor judges of their own condition; after a week of short nights, they report feeling “fine” while performing on tests like someone who is legally drunk. Some companies have started to respond, banning late-night emails or letting staff start later. Cynics note that these same companies still reward employees who are available around the clock. Until ambition and rest stop being treated as opposites, the advice to “just sleep more” will remain easy to give and strangely difficult to follow.
