A decade ago, buying second-hand clothes was something many people preferred not to mention. Today, apps for reselling used fashion are among the most downloaded in Europe, and vintage shops have moved from side streets to main shopping centers. The reasons for this shift are mixed. For some buyers, it is primarily about money: a barely worn designer jacket can cost a quarter of its original price. For others, the motivation is environmental, since the fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters, and extending a garment’s life is an easy way to reduce harm. Yet researchers have noticed an uncomfortable side effect. Because second-hand goods are so cheap and easy to resell, some consumers now buy more items than ever, treating their wardrobe as a constantly rotating stream rather than a collection of things they value. If the goal was to consume less, the result may be the opposite: the same appetite, served by a greener-looking machine. The market has changed; whether our habits have truly changed is another question.
