Few topics divide parents and teachers as reliably as homework. Defenders argue that it builds discipline, reinforces what was learned in class, and teaches children to manage their time, a skill no exam can measure. Critics respond that the research is far less flattering: in primary school, the connection between homework and achievement is weak at best, and the main measurable effect is often family stress at the kitchen table. The debate becomes more interesting when we ask what kind of homework is given. Copying exercises from a textbook is not the same as interviewing a grandparent about their childhood or measuring the temperature in different rooms of the house. Several schools have experimented with replacing traditional assignments with reading of the child’s choice, and reported that attitudes toward school improved without any drop in test results. Perhaps the question is not whether homework should exist, but whether we can honestly say what each assignment is for. A task without a clear purpose is not education; it is simply an evening occupied.
